SIKESTON - Shirley Anderson, an artist for almost 20 years, is continuing to use her talent to help others. Anderson has made two recent donations to local organizations that will aid in their fund-raising efforts.

Anderson has donated an embellished reproduction of one of her oil paintings to the Sikeston Area Humane Society and a custom portrait gift certificate to the American Cancer Society.

Anderson’s growing popularity in the art world has raised the demand and value of her work. She has been featured in magazines, won numerous awards and her work has been bought by celebrities such as Demi Moore.

For this reason, both organizations are enthusiastic about the donations and the money it will bring.

“We think this fund raiser will definitely be successful,” said Julie Aycock, income specialist at the American Cancer Society in Sikeston. “Everybody wants her paintings.”

The reproduction that will be auctioned off at the Humane Society’s annual Doggie Ball on June 10 is taken from her original oil painting “After The Hunt,” which shows two dogs resting by a creek. The print and frame, valued at more than $250, will be the largest item auctioned off at the Doggie Ball this year.

“We were blessed that she graced us with her generosity,” said Charlotte Vanover, Humane Society board member and chairman of the silent auction. “When she called and offered the painting, it brought tears to my eyes. Words can’t express our thanks.”

Although the auction is held for those donating to the Society and attending the Doggie Ball, due to the nature of the gift and the possible auction price the Humane Society will also take bids from those who can’t attend the event. Anyone not attending the event but interested in bidding on the painting can contact Charlotte Vanover at 380-2948.

Proceeds from the auction will go toward the general upkeep of the shelter. Sabona, M’s, Purse ‘N’ Ality, Blades and a number of other local businesses have also given products to be auctioned off at the event.

Anderson’s donation to the American Cancer Society will help in their Relay for Life which is set for July 14 and 15.

For every $5 a person donates to the Cancer Society between now and June 16, that person will be entered into a special drawing to win a $500 Father’s Day Gift Certificate for a custom oil painting by Anderson.

The $500 certificate will cover the price of a custom head and shoulders painting. A professional photo shoot will also be provided.

Any person can make their donation and enter the drawing at Joy’s Bridal, Susie’s or Vanessa’s Coffee Shop.

“I love donating to local organizations,” said Anderson. “And the people of Southeast Missouri and Sikeston have been magnificently supportive of my work. This is just my way to say thank you.”
